Krang Suri Waterfall: Meghalaya's Turquoise Swimming Pool

Meghalaya's Most Beautiful Swimming Spot

In a state famous for waterfalls, Krang Suri stands out. Located in the West Jaintia Hills near the village of Amlarem, this tiered waterfall drops into a pool of such vivid turquoise-blue that first-time visitors often stop and stare, convinced it's been photo-edited.

It hasn't. The colour is real β€” produced by the high mineral content of the water filtering through limestone, combined with the white sandy riverbed that reflects the light upward. The effect is most intense between October and April when water is clearest.

The Setting

The falls themselves are multi-tiered, with the main cascade dropping about 25 metres before fanning out over wide rock shelves into the main pool. The surrounding forest is dense and green, with boulders draped in moss and the sound of water everywhere.

A suspension bridge crosses the river just above the main pool, and there are changing rooms and basic facilities near the entrance. The site is maintained by the local community under an eco-tourism initiative.

Swimming at Krang Suri

Yes, you can swim here β€” and it is magnificent. The main pool is roughly chest-deep in the centre, with shallower sections near the banks. The water temperature is cool year-round (around 18–20Β°C) β€” refreshing in summer, bracing in winter.

Swimming tips:

  • Wear a swimsuit or bring a change of clothes β€” you will want to get in.
  • Krang Suri turquoise falls

  • Life jackets are available for rent at the site (recommended if you're not a strong swimmer β€” currents can be deceptive near the cascade).
  • The rocks are slippery β€” water shoes or old trainers are better than bare feet.
  • Don't go too close to the main cascade β€” the force of the water is strong.
  • Getting to Krang Suri

  • From Shillong:: 78km, approximately 2.5–3 hours on NH6 toward Jowai, then branch roads to Amlarem. The last 15km are on narrow roads β€” manageable in a good vehicle.
  • From Jowai:: 35km, approximately 1.5 hours.
  • From Dawki:: About 50km, making it possible to combine both in a long day.
  • Entry fee: β‚Ή30–50 for Indians. Parking available near the trailhead.

    The Walk Down

From the parking area, the path to the waterfall descends for about 20–25 minutes. It is steep in places β€” wear shoes with grip. The descent is through forest, and the sound of the falls grows louder as you approach. On the way back up, pace yourself β€” it's tiring in the heat.

    Best Time to Visit

  • October to December:: Post-monsoon. Water volume is high, the forest is lush, and the turquoise colour is at its most vivid.
  • January to March:: Clearest water and comfortable temperatures. Best for swimming.
  • Jaintia Hills waterfall

  • April to May:: Water levels drop, the pool becomes more shallow, but the colour remains stunning and fewer tourists visit.
  • June to September:: Monsoon season. The water is powerful and brown with silt β€” swimming is not safe or permitted. The approach trail becomes muddy.
  • What to Bring

  • Swimwear and a towel
  • Change of dry clothes
  • Water shoes or old trainers
  • Snacks and water (limited vendors near site)
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent
  • A waterproof bag for your phone
  • Combining with Other Jaintia Hills Attractions

Krang Suri works well as part of a longer Jaintia Hills circuit:

  • Thadlaskein Lake: β€” 40km from Krang Suri, sacred Jaintia lake
  • Nartiang Monoliths: β€” ancient standing stones 50km away
  • Jowai town: β€” local market, food, and accommodation hub
