Kynrem Falls: The 305-Metre Giant Most Tourists Drive Past

The Waterfall Hiding in Plain Sight

Twelve kilometres south of Cherrapunji, on the road that winds down toward the Bangladesh border, a 305-metre wall of water crashes down the cliffs in three distinct tiers. Kynrem Falls is the seventh-highest waterfall in India β€” and most Meghalaya itineraries skip it entirely.

That's partly geography: it sits inside Thangkharang Park, slightly off the standard Sohra loop, on the old road to Shella. And partly it's marketing β€” Nohkalikai gets the postcards. But ask any Sohra local for their favourite monsoon waterfall and Kynrem comes up again and again.

Why Monsoon Is Its Season

Kynrem is rain-fed, and its personality changes completely with the calendar. In winter it's a modest ribbon. From June to September it becomes a three-stage monster β€” the top tier leaps clear of the cliff, the middle tier explodes off a rock shelf, and the bottom tier throws mist across the road. Yes, the road: the highway passes close enough to the lowest tier that in peak flow your car gets a free wash.

That road-level encounter is what makes Kynrem special. Nohkalikai you admire from a distant viewpoint. Kynrem you experience β€” you hear it, feel the spray, crane your neck at all 305 metres of it.

Thangkharang Park: The Viewing Platform

The classic full view is from Thangkharang Park (small entry fee, open through monsoon). From the park's edge you get the entire three-tier drop in one frame, plus a bonus most people don't expect: the view over the Bangladesh plains, which in monsoon are flooded into a silver inland sea dotted with village islands. On clearer days you can trace the rivers winding toward Sylhet.

Combine it with Khoh Ramhah (Pillar Rock) two minutes away β€” the giant cone-shaped rock formation of Khasi legend β€” and Arwah Cave on the way back for a half-day circuit that rivals the main Sohra loop.
