The Best Waterfall State in India β It's Not Close
Meghalaya's geography is a waterfall machine: a high plateau that ends in sheer cliffs, hammered by the heaviest rain on the planet. The result is a concentration of world-class falls you can cover in a single trip β something no other Indian state offers.
Between June and September they all run at full throttle. Here's the field guide, roughly in driving order from Shillong.
The Headliners
Nohkalikai Falls (Sohra) β India's tallest plunge waterfall at 340 metres, dropping into a jade pool in a forested amphitheatre. In monsoon the plume throws mist a hundred metres up and the roar reaches the car park. Go early morning; clouds tend to fill the gorge by afternoon, and watching them part is a show of its own.
Seven Sisters Falls / Nohsngithiang (Mawsmai) β seven parallel streams pouring 315 metres off the plateau edge. This is a *monsoon-only* waterfall β outside the rains it thins to almost nothing. July and August are its glory months, especially in late-afternoon light when the cliff face glows behind the streams.
Elephant Falls (Shillong) β the classic three-tier cascade twenty minutes from Police Bazaar. Yes, it's popular. In monsoon the third tier β a wide silver curtain β earns every photograph. Go at opening time to beat the crowds.
Kynrem Falls (Thangkharang Park) β a 305-metre, three-tier giant that most tourists drive past without knowing. In monsoon it's arguably the most dramatic roadside view in the state β we've written a full guide to it on this blog.
The Connoisseur's Picks
Dainthlen Falls (Sohra) β broad, powerful, with a dark Khasi legend about a serpent slain in its pool. The rock formations at the lip are said to carry the marks of the battle. You can walk close to the edge here β in monsoon, treat the wet rock with respect.
Wei Sawdong (near Dainthlen) β the three-step turquoise staircase that broke Instagram. In monsoon the pools turn from turquoise to thundering white and the bamboo-ladder descent becomes slick; many days it's viewpoint-only. Still worth it β the triple-decker structure under full flow is extraordinary.

Krang Suri (Jaintia Hills) β the famous blue pool. Full transparency: swimming is unsafe and closed JuneβAugust, and the falls are best enjoyed as a viewpoint in peak monsoon. If a swim in that impossible blue water is your goal, come in October instead.
Phe Phe Falls (Jaintia Hills) β the two-tier beauty that's become the adventure crowd's favourite. Monsoon turns it ferocious; the trail down demands proper shoes.
