The Waterfalls Tourists Don't Find
Meghalaya is famous for waterfalls β Nohkalikai, Seven Sisters, Elephant Falls. These draw thousands of visitors. But in the folds of the Jaintia Hills and the forests around Jowai, there are waterfalls that see a handful of visitors a week. Phe Phe Falls is the most talked-about of these hidden gems.
Getting there requires a real trek through jungle. There are no viewing platforms, no ticket booths, no food stalls at the bottom. What there is: a powerful waterfall dropping into a pool surrounded by dense forest, birdsong, and total silence except for the rush of water.
Phe Phe Falls
Location & Access
Phe Phe Falls is located near the village of Laitryngew, approximately 20km from Jowai (65km from Shillong). The last few kilometres require a 4WD vehicle on a rough track, followed by a 45β60 minute trek through forest to reach the falls.
The trek is not technically difficult but requires navigating a narrow forest path, crossing a stream, and descending a fairly steep hillside near the end. Proper footwear is essential. A local guide is strongly recommended β the path is not marked and it's easy to take the wrong branch.
The Falls
Phe Phe drops approximately 30 metres in a single fan-shaped curtain over a wide basalt ledge, spreading into a broad, shallow pool at the base. The ledge behind the falls allows you to walk partially behind the cascade β a memorable experience. During October and November, the flow is powerful; by March it becomes more of a veil.
The Atmosphere
What makes Phe Phe special is the complete absence of infrastructure. No guardrails, no illuminated signs, no vendors. Just the forest, the sound of water, and the feeling that you've found something most people drive past without knowing exists.
Lailad Waterfall
About 15km from Jowai on a different route, Lailad is another little-known waterfall accessible by a shorter trek (20β30 minutes from the road). It's a tiered waterfall with a scenic rocky gorge β not as dramatic as Phe Phe but easier to access and equally crowd-free.
Combining Lailad and Phe Phe in a single day gives you a full adventure itinerary in the Jaintia Hills with minimal tourist traffic.
