The Waterfalls Tourists Don't Find

Meghalaya is famous for waterfalls β€” Nohkalikai, Seven Sisters, Elephant Falls. These draw thousands of visitors. But in the folds of the Jaintia Hills and the forests around Jowai, there are waterfalls that see a handful of visitors a week. Phe Phe Falls is the most talked-about of these hidden gems.

Getting there requires a real trek through jungle. There are no viewing platforms, no ticket booths, no food stalls at the bottom. What there is: a powerful waterfall dropping into a pool surrounded by dense forest, birdsong, and total silence except for the rush of water.

Phe Phe Falls

Location & Access

Phe Phe Falls is located near the village of Laitryngew, approximately 20km from Jowai (65km from Shillong). The last few kilometres require a 4WD vehicle on a rough track, followed by a 45–60 minute trek through forest to reach the falls.

The trek is not technically difficult but requires navigating a narrow forest path, crossing a stream, and descending a fairly steep hillside near the end. Proper footwear is essential. A local guide is strongly recommended β€” the path is not marked and it's easy to take the wrong branch.

The Falls

Phe Phe drops approximately 30 metres in a single fan-shaped curtain over a wide basalt ledge, spreading into a broad, shallow pool at the base. The ledge behind the falls allows you to walk partially behind the cascade β€” a memorable experience. During October and November, the flow is powerful; by March it becomes more of a veil.

The Atmosphere

What makes Phe Phe special is the complete absence of infrastructure. No guardrails, no illuminated signs, no vendors. Just the forest, the sound of water, and the feeling that you've found something most people drive past without knowing exists.

Lailad Waterfall

About 15km from Jowai on a different route, Lailad is another little-known waterfall accessible by a shorter trek (20–30 minutes from the road). It's a tiered waterfall with a scenic rocky gorge β€” not as dramatic as Phe Phe but easier to access and equally crowd-free.

Combining Lailad and Phe Phe in a single day gives you a full adventure itinerary in the Jaintia Hills with minimal tourist traffic.

Other Hidden Waterfalls in Meghalaya

Langshiang Falls

Deep in the West Khasi Hills near Nongstoin, Langshiang is one of the tallest waterfalls in India (reputedly over 300 metres) but extremely difficult to access. It requires a full day's journey and local guides. For serious waterfall hunters only.

Tyrshi Falls

Near Jowai, Tyrshi is a seasonal waterfall best seen in October–November. Easier access than Phe Phe, with a shorter trail.

Weinia Waterfalls

Near the town of Williamnagar in the Garo Hills, Weinia is a lesser-visited fall surrounded by subtropical forest.

Tips for Waterfall Trekking in Meghalaya

  • Always hire a local guide: for off-the-beaten-path waterfalls. Trails are rarely marked and forest paths branch frequently.
  • Go in the morning: β€” afternoon light makes photography harder and you want daylight for the return trek.
  • Wear sturdy shoes: β€” not sandals. River crossings and muddy trails require grip.
  • October to December: is the sweet spot: post-monsoon flows are strong but paths are not too muddy.
  • Tell someone your plan: β€” if trekking to remote falls, let your driver or hotel know where you're going.
  • Carry water and snacks: β€” there are no facilities at or near the falls.
  • Best Time to Visit

  • October to November:: Maximum water volume, lush forest, dramatic conditions
  • December to February:: Lower flow but cleaner pools, more manageable trek
  • March to May:: Minimal flow, but the forest is beautiful and you may have the falls completely to yourself
