Seven Sisters Falls: The Waterfall That Only Exists in Monsoon

A Waterfall With a Calendar

Most waterfalls shrink in the dry season. Seven Sisters Falls โ€” Nohsngithiang, near Mawsmai village in Sohra โ€” simply switches off. From October to May, visitors stand at the viewpoint staring at a mostly bare cliff, wondering what the fuss is about. Guides get asked, gently, whether the falls have been "closed."

Then June arrives. The monsoon detonates over the Sohra plateau, and within days the cliff transforms: seven distinct streams, side by side, plunging 315 metres off the southern edge of the Khasi Hills toward the Bangladesh plains. It's one of the tallest waterfalls in India โ€” and one of the only famous ones with a strict operating season.

If Seven Sisters is on your bucket list, a monsoon trip isn't the better option. It's the only option.

The Name and the Setting

The seven segments give the falls their English name โ€” one stream for each of the seven sister states of Northeast India, as the popular telling goes. The Khasi name, Nohsngithiang, is often translated as "the place where the sun sets" โ€” and late afternoon is indeed the magic window, when the west-leaning light hits the limestone behind the water and the whole cliff face glows amber behind seven silver curtains.

The falls drop from the edge of the plateau near Mawsmai, which means you view them from the side rather than head-on โ€” a full kilometre of cliff with the streams spaced across it like strings on an instrument.

Where to See It

The Mawsmai viewpoint on the main Sohra road is the classic angle โ€” free, roadside, often misty in the morning and clear by mid-afternoon.

Eco Park puts you *on top* of the falls. The streams flow through the park's gardens and then simply vanish off the edge. Standing at the railing watching water leap into a 300-metre void, with flooded Bangladesh silver on the horizon, is one of Meghalaya's defining moments.

Making the Most of It

  • Best months:: July and August, when all seven streams run fat and unbroken. June and September are strong; early October is a gamble.
  • Best hour:: 3โ€“5 PM for the backlit glow. Mornings are for Nohkalikai (whose gorge clouds up after midday) โ€” the two falls conveniently prefer opposite ends of the day.
  • Mist rule:: if the viewpoint is socked in, wait twenty minutes. Sohra mist moves fast, and the reveal โ€” seven streams appearing out of a white wall โ€” beats a clear-sky arrival anyway.
  • Combine with:: Mawsmai Cave next door (all-weather), Nohkalikai in the morning, Eco Park, and the Sohra market for lunch.
  • The Practical Bit

Seven Sisters is a kilometre from Mawsmai village, 55 km / 90 minutes from Shillong, and features in every Sohra day trip we run from June through September. The trick is sequencing the day around light and mist โ€” which is what a driver who's watched this cliff for years quietly handles for you.
