Shnongpdeng: The Ultimate Adventure Camp on the Umngot River

Beyond Dawki — Where Adventure Lives

Most visitors to the Dawki–Umngot River area stop at the main Dawki ghat, take a boat ride on the crystal-clear water, and head back to Shillong. Those who go 3 km further downstream discover something entirely different: Shnongpdeng, a small village that has quietly become one of Northeast India's best adventure tourism destinations.

The Umngot here is equally clear — in fact, some argue Shnongpdeng's stretch is even more transparent than Dawki's because of fewer boats. But it's the combination of crystal water + dramatic cliffs + camping culture that makes Shnongpdeng special.

Adventure Activities

Cliff Jumping

The main attraction. A rocky outcrop about 20 feet (6 metres) above the river provides the jump point. The water below is crystal clear and deep enough to be safe. Local guides supervise. For most people this is a bucket-list experience — leaping from rock into glass-clear water is something you'll describe for years.

For the braver: a higher 30-foot jump point is also used by locals and experienced adventure seekers.

Zip-Lining

A zip-line crosses the Umngot, taking you over the crystal water at speed. The view from mid-air — looking down at the river bed through perfect transparency — is extraordinary.

Kayaking

Single and double kayaks are available for rent. Paddle upstream toward Dawki (relatively flat current) or downstream through slightly faster water. No prior experience required for the calmer sections.

Snorkelling

With 4–6 feet of crystal-clear water, Shnongpdeng offers remarkably rewarding snorkelling even without marine life. The river bed — smooth pebbles, aquatic plants, darting small fish — is fascinating to explore close-up.

Night Fishing

Local guides offer night fishing experiences for freshwater fish (best October–February). You don't need to be a serious angler to enjoy it.

Camping

Camping is the heart of Shnongpdeng's appeal. Several local operators set up tented camps on the riverbank from October to May:

  • Tents:: Swiss-style or dome tents on platforms above the waterline
  • Meals:: Usually included — local food (rice, dal, fish curry, bamboo shoot) cooked fresh
  • Bonfire:: Evenings by a fire on the riverbank are one of the classic Northeast India experiences
  • Price:: ₹800–1,500 per person per night including tent and meals (varies by operator and season)
  • Waking up inside a tent to the sound of the Umngot and the mist over crystal water at 6 AM is extraordinary.

    Practical Information

  • Location:: 3 km downstream from Dawki ghat. From Shillong: 98 km, approximately 2.5 hours.
  • Season:: October to May. Avoid monsoon — river floods and activities stop.
  • Best months:: November to February (clearest water, coolest weather).
  • Booking:: Advance booking essential for camping (especially December–January peak season).
  • How to Get There

Shnongpdeng is best reached by private cab from Shillong. A day-trip is possible, but spending a night changes the experience entirely. We include both Dawki and Shnongpdeng in our 3-day and 5-day Meghalaya packages.

    Tips

  • Carry a change of clothes — you will get wet.
  • Waterproof bags/cases for your phone are essential.
  • Cliff jumping requires basic swimming ability. Non-swimmers can watch and snorkel in shallower areas.
  • The village has no ATMs — carry cash.
