5 Days

Meghalaya Classic (4N/5D)

Five days, four nights — Meghalaya's complete arc with minimum driving each day. Shillong base on arrival, a riverside night at Dawki/Shnongpdeng, a clifftop night at Cherrapunji, then back to Shillong for the city sights, and a sacred-forest or canyon morning before the airport drop. Every overnight is placed in-circuit so you spend more time at the spots and less in the cab.

Places: Guwahati, Shillong (Umiam, Don Bosco, Peak, Elephant Falls, Ward's Lake, Police Bazaar), Krang Suri, Dawki, Shnongpdeng, Mawlynnong, Cherrapunji (Nohkalikai, Seven Sisters, Mawsmai, Wei Sawdong, Thangkharang), Mawphlang Sacred Forest / Laitlum

Your Itinerary

Day 1Guwahati → Shillong (Light Arrival)

Morning 🚗 Pickup at Guwahati Airport, Kamakhya Railway, Guwahati Railway or your Guwahati hotel

luggage loads into the cab, no mid-day hotel transfer

Morning 🛣️ Drive to Shillong

97 km via NH6, approx 2.5–3 hrs through tea-growing belts and the climb into the Khasi Hills

Mid-Morning 🌅 Umiam Lake (Barapani)

Meghalaya's largest blue reservoir; quick photo stop on the dam-side ridge or a 30-min paddle-boat ride if time

Midday 🍽️ Lunch in Shillong

Afternoon 🏛️ Don Bosco Museum (Mawlai)

seven floors covering every Northeast Indian tribe; textiles, instruments, oral history; rooftop walkway has the city's best skyline view

Late Afternoon 🏨 Drop at your Shillong hotel

first and only hotel transfer of the day; check in, freshen up

Evening Rest at the hotel

a light arrival day on purpose, so you start fresh for the big drive tomorrow

🌙Overnight Shillong
⚠️

Per Meghalaya Cabs policy: only one hotel pickup + one hotel drop is included on a tour day. Luggage stays in the cab from pickup until the end-of-day drop. Mid-day check-ins, dinner pickups/drops, or any additional hotel runs are charged extra.

⚠️

Don Bosco is closed every Sunday — if Day 1 lands on a Sunday we substitute with a brief Ward's Lake walk and an evening at Police Bazaar. Day 2 is a long drive — sleep early.

Day 2Shillong → Krang Suri → Dawki / Shnongpdeng

Pre-Dawn 🚗 Early start

leave by 06:30; this is the longest driving day of the trip

Early Morning 🛣️ Drive Shillong → Krang Suri Falls

94 km via Jowai and Amlarem road, approx 2.5 hrs through the Jaintia Hills

Morning 🏊 Krang Suri Falls

a 20 m waterfall feeds an electric turquoise pool in the forest; wade in from the flat rock ledge; the water is cold and crystal-clear; bring a change of clothes

Mid-Morning 🛣️ Drive Krang Suri → Dawki

70 km via the Amlarem descent, approx 2 hrs through limestone country

Midday 🍽️ Lunch at a riverside spot at Dawki or Shnongpdeng

Afternoon 🚣 Umngot River boat ride

the riverbed is visible through the emerald-clear water as if the boat is floating on glass; the most photographed river in India

Afternoon 📸 Dawki Suspension Bridge + Bangladesh border viewpoint

one of India's oldest wire suspension bridges, the border is just across

Late Afternoon 🛣️ Drive to Shnongpdeng

8 km, 15 min

Late Afternoon 🏖️ Shnongpdeng Riverside

Dawki's quieter twin; cliff jumping, kayaking, bamboo rafting (paid); turquoise water, white pebble banks; sunset light on the Umngot is unforgettable

🌙Overnight Shnongpdeng riverside camp or Dawki guesthouse
⚠️

Dawki/Shnongpdeng is clearest Oct–Apr — monsoon silt washes out the glass-clear effect. The 06:30 start is essential; leaving later compresses your Krang Suri time.

🎯 Optional: Sunset kayak on the Umngot (₹300–500 per person) — quiet, slow, and the best way to end this day

Day 3Shnongpdeng → Mawlynnong → Cherrapunji

Early Morning 🚗 Depart Shnongpdeng/Dawki for Mawlynnong

27 km, approx 45 min

Morning 🌺 Mawlynnong Village

Asia's Cleanest Village (National Geographic, 2003); flower-lined pathways, bamboo dustbins on every corner; mornings are quietest and most beautiful

Morning 🌳 Riwai Living Root Bridge

20-min forest walk to a centuries-old rubber-fig root bridge arched over a cool stream

Morning 🌿 Bamboo Skywalk

treetop platform looking across to the Bangladesh plains; light shifts on the plains all morning

Midday 🍽️ Lunch

Mawlynnong home-kitchen meal or village café

Midday 🛣️ Drive Mawlynnong → Cherrapunji

82 km via Pynursla, approx 2.5 hrs through misty hill road

Afternoon 🌄 Mawkdok Dympep Valley Viewpoint

dramatic gorge viewpoint on the way into Sohra; zipline available ₹500–800

Afternoon 🏔️ Thangkharang Park

Bangladesh plains panorama + Kynrem Falls cascading in the gorge below

Late Afternoon 🏨 Check in to a Cherrapunji clifftop resort; sunset over the gorge

🌙Overnight Cherrapunji
⚠️

Thangkharang closes at 16:00 without exception — arrive before 15:30. If running late, skip the Mawkdok zipline and head straight to the viewpoint.

Day 4Cherrapunji Waterfall Circuit → Shillong (Rest Evening)

Early Morning 🚗 Start the Cherrapunji circuit from your hotel

Morning 💧 Nohkalikai Falls

India's tallest plunge waterfall at 335 m; mist drifts up from the gorge year-round; green pool visible at base

Morning 🌊 Seven Sisters Falls (Nohsngithiang)

seven parallel streams cascading from the plateau edge; the highway viewpoint catches all seven in one frame

Mid-Morning 🪨 Mawsmai Cave

150 m lit limestone passage; cave floor is permanently wet; wear grip shoes

Mid-Morning 💧 Wei Sawdong Falls

hidden three-tier cascade, 10-min stone-step descent; far fewer visitors than the other Cherrapunji waterfalls

Midday 🍽️ Lunch in Cherrapunji

Afternoon 🌊 Dainthlen Falls

powerful roadside cascade on the return road; brief stop

Afternoon 🛣️ Drive Cherrapunji → Shillong

54 km via NH206, approx 1.5–2 hrs

Late Afternoon 🏨 Check in to Shillong hotel; rest the evening

tomorrow is the airport-bound day

Evening 🛍️ Optional: short walk in Police Bazaar near the hotel for street food and last-minute Khasi handicrafts

🌙Overnight Shillong
⚠️

Mawsmai Cave closed Sundays — substitute Eco Park (₹20). The day stays sensibly within Cherrapunji's km cap; getting back to Shillong by late afternoon means a relaxed evening at the hotel and an unhurried start tomorrow.

Day 5Shillong Local Sights (if time permits) → Guwahati Drop

Morning ☕ Unhurried breakfast at the Shillong hotel

Morning 🏔️ Shillong Peak (1,966 m)

panoramic 360° view of the city, valleys, Umiam Lake and the Assam plains beyond; early morning is clearest

Morning 💧 Elephant Falls

three tiers descending through dense subtropical forest; stone steps to each level

Mid-Morning 🌸 Ward's Lake

ornamental colonial-era lake with paddleboats, flowerbeds and a Japanese-style wooden bridge

Mid-Morning 🛍️ Police Bazaar

Shillong's central market; Khasi handicrafts, bamboo honey, dried spices; jadoh, tungrymbai and doh khleh at street stalls

Midday 🍽️ Lunch in Shillong

Afternoon 🛣️ Drive Shillong → Guwahati

97 km via NH6, approx 2.5–3 hrs

Late Afternoon 🏁 Drop at Guwahati Airport or Railway Station

⚠️

Day 5 priorities are flight-led. If your departure is before 17:00, leave Shillong by 12:00 latest — that leaves 2–3 hrs for whichever locals you can fit (typically Shillong Peak + Elephant Falls + a quick Police Bazaar stop). For early flights before 14:00, skip the city sights and depart Shillong by 08:30. Mention your flight time at booking and we'll lock the morning plan to it.
