Northeast India's Adventure Hub
Meghalaya's extraordinary landscape — high plateaus, deep gorges, powerful rivers, and clear-water pools — creates the natural conditions for adventure sports. In recent years, the state has developed a range of activities for adrenaline seekers, from the accessible (zip-lining) to the intense (caving expeditions and waterfall rappelling).
Here is a guide to the best adventure activities in Meghalaya and how to access them.
---
Zip-lining: Mawkdok Valley
The most immediately accessible adventure activity in Meghalaya is the zip-line at Mawkdok Dympep Valley, located on the Shillong–Cherrapunji highway (25km from Shillong).
The zip-line crosses the Mawkdok gorge — a dramatic drop of several hundred metres into the valley below. You launch from one side, crossing 1km of cable above deep forested gorge country, reaching the other side in approximately 2 minutes.

Kayaking & Water Sports: Umiam Lake
Umiam Lake (Barapani) offers a range of water sports on its massive reservoir — paddling distance from Shillong at just 17km:
The lake is calm and suitable for beginners. Lakeside Adventure Resort at Umiam is the main organized operator. Activities are available October through May (November–February is most pleasant temperature-wise).
---
Cliff Jumping: Dawki & Krang Suri
Dawki (Umngot River): Several rock formations along the Umngot River near Dawki are used as natural cliff jumping points. Heights range from 4–8 metres. Local youth can show you the established jump spots. Check depth carefully before jumping — the river's crystal clarity makes depth harder to judge than cloudy water.
Krang Suri Falls: The main pool at Krang Suri has rock formations of 3–5 metres that visitors jump from. The water is chest to head-deep at the jump points. A popular activity in the October–April season.

Caving: Meghalaya Adventure Association
Meghalaya has over 1,700 documented caves — the largest cave system in South Asia. The Meghalaya Adventure Association (MAA) offers guided caving for all levels:
Contact MAA at their office in Cherrapunji to book according to your skill level.
---
Waterfall Rappelling: Cherrapunji Area
Rappelling down active waterfalls is offered by adventure operators near Cherrapunji. This involves descending the face of a waterfall on rope — an intense experience combining water, height, and adrenaline.
Operators include local adventure companies in Cherrapunji who can be found through your hotel or at the MAA office. Always verify operator credentials and equipment before booking.
---
White-water Rafting: Umngot & Kynshi Rivers
The Umngot River (which flows through Dawki) offers Grade 2–3 rapids upstream from the border crossing — accessible for intermediate rafters.
The Kynshi River in the West Khasi Hills has more technical rapids for experienced kayakers and rafters.
Organized rafting on the Umngot is available through a handful of operators in Dawki — best booked through local tourism offices.

Trekking & Rock Climbing
Beyond the trails covered in our trekking guide, Meghalaya has developing rock climbing potential. The limestone and sandstone cliffs around Cherrapunji and the Jaintia Hills have established routes used by local climbing clubs. Contact the Meghalaya Adventure Association for current climbing route information.
---
Paragliding
Paragliding has been trialed from several Meghalaya hillsides — the thermals above the Cherrapunji plateau and near Shillong are promising. However, organized commercial paragliding is not yet consistently available in Meghalaya (unlike Pokhara in Nepal or Bir Billing in Himachal). Check with local adventure operators for current availability.
