Alleppey Houseboat Guide: What Nobody Tells You Before You Book

A houseboat is a day and a night, not an afternoon

This is the single most useful thing to know before you book one.

A kettuvallam boards around noon or shortly after. It cruises through the afternoon. It moors before dusk, because movement on the canals is not permitted after dark. You sleep tied up. You have breakfast aboard and disembark around nine the next morning.

That means a houseboat consumes a full day of your itinerary and a night. It cannot be squeezed in as an afternoon activity between two other places, and any itinerary that tries is going to disappoint you.

What actually happens on board

You board, and lunch is served almost immediately — usually a Kerala meal on a banana leaf, and usually excellent, because the cook is the crew member who matters most.

Then you cruise. The main channels of Vembanad are wide and busy with other boats. The narrow canals are where it gets good: paddy fields sitting below the water line behind low bunds, ducks being herded along the bank, children going home from school along the towpath, church bells.

Around five the boat noses into a bank and ties up. Tea arrives. Then the light goes, the birds get loud, and it is very quiet.

Dinner is cooked while you sit on the deck. That is the evening. That is the whole evening. If that sounds boring, a houseboat may genuinely not be for you.

Private versus shared — the honest answer

Shared boats give you a cabin on a larger vessel with other couples or families. Cheaper, perfectly comfortable, and you share the deck.

Private boats are typically one or two bedrooms, and the deck is yours.

The deck is the point. It is where you spend the afternoon and the entire evening. On a honeymoon or any trip where the quiet is what you came for, the private boat is worth the difference. On a family trip with children who will be happier with other children about, a shared boat is fine and you keep the money.

Alleppey or Kumarakom?

Alappuzha (Alleppey) has the bigger boat fleet and the more famous canal network. It is busier, and in season the main channel can feel like a traffic jam of houseboats.

Kumarakom is quieter, more upmarket, and better for birdlife — the sanctuary is right there. Fewer boats, and the ones there tend to be more expensive.

If it is your first time, Alleppey. If you have done it before and found it crowded, Kumarakom.

Food, and what to bring

Meals are included and cooked on board: lunch, evening tea and snacks, dinner, breakfast. Fish is usually karimeen (pearl spot), and it is very good. Tell the operator in advance if anyone is vegetarian or has an allergy — the cook shops before you board, not after.

Alcohol is not stocked. Kerala restricts it and houseboats do not carry it. If you want a drink on the deck, buy it before you reach the jetty.

Bring mosquito repellent. The boats have nets and most have air-conditioned cabins, but the deck at dusk is the deck at dusk.

Air-conditioning, and the generator

Most boats run the cabin air-conditioning only at night, on a generator, usually from around nine in the evening to six in the morning. Daytime cooling on a moving boat is uncommon, and you do not need it — the breeze on the water handles it.

Ask what the boat's AC hours are before booking. Operators who are vague about this are being vague for a reason.

When to go

September to March is the reliable window.

The monsoon is a real option here in a way it is not in the hills — the backwaters in rain, from a covered deck, are genuinely lovely, and it is the cheapest time of year. What you lose is the sunset.

Avoid April and May if you can. It is hot and humid and the canals are low.

Where it fits in a trip

After the hills, before you fly home. Munnar and Thekkady are demanding days with early starts. The houseboat is the day you stop. Putting it at the front of an itinerary wastes it.
