Cash Is Still King in Northeast India
Northeast India has embraced digital payments more slowly than Indian metros β and in rural Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh, cash is still king. Knowing where to get money, how much to carry, and which payment methods actually work can save your trip from grinding to a halt in a remote hill town with empty pockets.

ATM Situation by Location
Shillong
Multiple ATMs across the city β SBI, HDFC, Axis, ICICI, PNB, and others. Reliable and well-stocked. Withdraw a significant amount here before leaving the city.
Cherrapunji (Sohra)
A few ATMs in the market area. SBI and PNB ATMs are available but may run dry on weekends (when tourist traffic is highest). Withdraw in Shillong as backup.
Dawki
Very limited ATMs. One SBI ATM in the town β it frequently runs out of cash on busy weekends (OctoberβFebruary). Do not rely on Dawki as a cash source.
Jowai (Jaintia Hills)
Good ATM coverage for a smaller town β SBI, HDFC, and Axis ATMs available. More reliable than Cherrapunji.
Nongstoin (West Khasi Hills)
Limited ATMs. One or two machines that may not always be functional or stocked. Fill up in Shillong.
Tura (Garo Hills)
Good coverage β SBI, HDFC, Axis ATMs. The Garo Hills' main town is reasonably well-served.
Arunachal Pradesh (Bomdila, Tawang)
SBI ATMs only in most small towns. Tawang has a working SBI ATM but cash supply can be limited. Always carry extra cash into Arunachal.
Remote Rural Areas
Assume no ATMs in any village, waterfall area, or trekking destination. Carry everything you need.
