Cash Is Still King in Northeast India

Northeast India has embraced digital payments more slowly than Indian metros β€” and in rural Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh, cash is still king. Knowing where to get money, how much to carry, and which payment methods actually work can save your trip from grinding to a halt in a remote hill town with empty pockets.

ATM Situation by Location

Shillong

Multiple ATMs across the city β€” SBI, HDFC, Axis, ICICI, PNB, and others. Reliable and well-stocked. Withdraw a significant amount here before leaving the city.

Cherrapunji (Sohra)

A few ATMs in the market area. SBI and PNB ATMs are available but may run dry on weekends (when tourist traffic is highest). Withdraw in Shillong as backup.

Dawki

Very limited ATMs. One SBI ATM in the town β€” it frequently runs out of cash on busy weekends (October–February). Do not rely on Dawki as a cash source.

Jowai (Jaintia Hills)

Good ATM coverage for a smaller town β€” SBI, HDFC, and Axis ATMs available. More reliable than Cherrapunji.

Nongstoin (West Khasi Hills)

Limited ATMs. One or two machines that may not always be functional or stocked. Fill up in Shillong.

Tura (Garo Hills)

Good coverage β€” SBI, HDFC, Axis ATMs. The Garo Hills' main town is reasonably well-served.

Arunachal Pradesh (Bomdila, Tawang)

SBI ATMs only in most small towns. Tawang has a working SBI ATM but cash supply can be limited. Always carry extra cash into Arunachal.

Remote Rural Areas

Assume no ATMs in any village, waterfall area, or trekking destination. Carry everything you need.

How Much Cash to Carry

For a 5-day Meghalaya trip, budget approximately:

  • Entry fees: β‚Ή200–500 total
  • Meals (β‚Ή300–600 per person per day): β‚Ή1,500–3,000
  • Guides: β‚Ή300–500 per excursion
  • Boat rides (Dawki): β‚Ή500–800 per boat
  • Shopping and incidentals: β‚Ή1,000–2,000
  • Total: β‚Ή4,000–7,000 per person for 5 days: (excluding cab and accommodation)
  • Carry β‚Ή8,000–10,000 per person if you want a comfortable buffer.

UPI & Digital Payments in Meghalaya

UPI (PhonePe, GPay, Paytm) works in Shillong and major tourist towns. However:

  • Village shops, rural dhabas, and small guesthouses often only accept cash
  • Boat operators at Dawki are usually cash-only
  • Entry fees at forest and waterfall sites are cash-only
  • Guides and local operators: largely cash-only
  • What accepts UPI reliably: Mid-range hotels in Shillong, established restaurants, supermarkets, and some larger shops.

    Card Payments

Debit and credit cards are accepted at:

  • Upmarket hotels in Shillong (though check in advance)
  • Some mid-range restaurants in Shillong
  • Petrol stations (sometimes)
  • Cards are generally not accepted at village homestays, roadside dhabas, small shops, or any rural location.

    ---

    International Cards & Forex

  • ATMs in Shillong accept major international debit/credit cards: (Visa, Mastercard) with a foreign transaction fee
  • Currency exchange offices: are available in Shillong (police bazaar area)
  • Avoid arriving from abroad with only a card β€” withdraw cash in Shillong immediately

Tips to Avoid Running Out of Cash

  • **Withdraw at a major city ATM** (Shillong, Guwahati, Tura) before venturing into rural areas.
  • **Check the ATM before the queue** β€” many ATMs display whether they're operational.
  • **Ask your hotel** if there's a reliable ATM nearby β€” staff know which machines are reliably stocked.
  • **Keep small denominations** β€” β‚Ή100 and β‚Ή200 notes are easier for buying chai, paying guides, and using rural facilities.
  • **SBI ATMs are the most reliable** in smaller Northeast towns β€” they're the government bank with the widest rural network.
