Best Time to Visit Meghalaya

Short answer: October to April is the ideal window for most travellers. But the real answer depends on what you want to see. Here's the full month-by-month breakdown.

Month-by-Month Guide

October β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜… (Best month overall)

The monsoon has just ended. Waterfalls are at their most powerful β€” Nohkalikai and Seven Sisters Falls are absolutely spectacular. The air is fresh and washed clean. Lush green everywhere. Weather is cool (~18–22Β°C in Shillong). Roads are clear. Dawki water starts clearing up.

Perfect for: Cherrapunji waterfalls, Laitlum Canyons, scenic drives

November β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜… (Excellent)

Arguably the best photography month. Waterfalls are still strong, skies are clear, and temperatures are comfortable. The Nongkrem Dance Festival happens in November near Shillong β€” catch it if your dates align. Dawki is glass-clear from mid-November.

Perfect for: Everything. This is peak season for good reason.

December β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜† (Very Good)

Cool to cold (Shillong can drop to 4–5Β°C at night). Days are clear and crisp. Waterfalls are less powerful but still beautiful. Christmas in Shillong is a special experience β€” the city has a strong Christian heritage and celebrates with lights, music, and markets. Dawki is at its clearest.

Perfect for: Dawki, Mawlynnong, Shillong city, photography

January β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜† (Very Good)

Cold, especially at night. Fog can roll in during mornings. Clear skies by late morning. Waterfalls are lower-volume but the pools are stunning and serene. Less crowded than November–December.

Perfect for: Nongriat trek (cooler, easier on the legs), Dawki, quiet exploration

February β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜† (Great)

Temperatures start climbing slightly. Still cool and pleasant. Cherry blossoms appear in Shillong (usually mid to late February) β€” a surprise highlight many visitors don't know about.

Perfect for: Shillong cherry blossom views, photography, comfortable trekking

March β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜† (Good)

Warming up. Days are 22–26Β°C, nights still cool. Some waterfalls are at lower levels now. Dawki is still clear. Flowers bloom across Meghalaya. Ka Shad Suk Mynsiem festival happens in April but preparations begin in March.

Perfect for: Road trips, budget travel (fewer crowds)

April β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜†β˜† (Good, getting warm)

Temperatures rise to 25–28Β°C in Shillong. The hills are warm and green. Pre-monsoon showers can begin towards late April. Good for budget travellers as crowds thin out.

Perfect for: Mawlynnong, Jowai, Dawki (still clear early April)

May β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜†β˜† (Transitional)

Pre-monsoon rains can begin. Weather unpredictable. Not ideal for planning a full circuit but can still work for a Shillong + Cherrapunji trip if you're flexible with your days.

Caution: Roads can get slippery. Some remote sites may be partially inaccessible.

June β˜…β˜…β˜†β˜†β˜† (Monsoon begins)

Monsoon arrives. Cherrapunji and Mawsynram can receive 500–1,500 mm of rain in a single month. Waterfalls become thunderous but road conditions deteriorate rapidly. Dawki boats don't operate when water levels rise.

Only for: Experienced travellers who specifically want to see the monsoon spectacle. Not recommended for families.

July–August β˜…β˜…β˜†β˜†β˜† (Peak monsoon)

The heaviest rainfall season on Earth. Landslides can block roads for days. Many guesthouses in Cherrapunji and Dawki close or become inaccessible. The waterfalls are magnificent β€” if you can reach them.

Verdict: Experienced monsoon photographers love this. First-time travellers should avoid.

September β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜†β˜† (Late monsoon)

Rain starts easing. The landscape is intensely green. Some waterfalls are at their absolute fullest. Road conditions improving. A good month for travellers who don't mind some rain and want lush landscapes + full waterfalls.
