Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit: Choosing Your Nepal Trek

Nepal's Two Great Treks

If you're heading to Nepal for a serious trek, two routes dominate the conversation: the Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek and the Annapurna Circuit. Both are among the most famous long-distance treks in the world. Both take 12–21 days. Both reward trekkers with extraordinary mountain scenery and Himalayan village culture.

But they are meaningfully different experiences. Choosing the right one depends on your goals, fitness level, budget, and how much time you have.

Everest Base Camp Trek

The Route

The classic EBC trek begins with a dramatic flight to Lukla (one of the world's most thrilling airport approaches β€” a short runway on a mountain shelf). From Lukla, you trek through the Khumbu region, passing through Namche Bazaar (the Sherpa capital), Tengboche Monastery, Dingboche, and Lobuche before reaching Everest Base Camp at 5,364 metres.

Most trekkers also make the side trip to Kala Patthar (5,643m) β€” a high point with the definitive view of Everest summit (Base Camp itself doesn't have a clear view of the summit).

Distance: Approximately 130km round trip

Duration: 12–16 days (including necessary acclimatization days)

Maximum Altitude: 5,643m (Kala Patthar) or 5,364m (Base Camp)

What Makes EBC Special

  • You are in Sherpa country β€” one of the most distinctive mountain cultures on earth
  • The approach through **Sagarmatha National Park** (a UNESCO site) is spectacular
  • The sense of arrival at Base Camp β€” standing in the shadow of the world's highest mountain β€” is genuinely moving
  • Tengboche Monastery at dawn (with Ama Dablam above) is one of the great visual moments in Himalayan trekking
  • Everest Base Camp trail

    What to Consider

  • Altitude sickness risk is high: β€” 5,000m+ requires careful acclimatization
  • The trail is crowded, particularly October–November and March–May
  • Lodge accommodation is basic at higher elevations
  • Lukla flights can be delayed or cancelled in bad weather, disrupting your schedule

    Annapurna Circuit

    The Route

The Annapurna Circuit circumnavigates the entire Annapurna massif β€” a loop trek that begins in the lowland rice terraces of the Modi Khola valley and climbs to the Thorong La pass (5,416m) before descending into the Mustang rain shadow and returning via Tatopani and Pokhara.

Distance: 160–230km (depending on route variations)

Duration: 15–21 days for the full circuit (shorter sections possible)

Maximum Altitude: 5,416m (Thorong La Pass)

    What Makes the Circuit Special

  • The **diversity** is extraordinary β€” subtropical forest, rice terraces, alpine meadows, high-altitude desert, medieval Thakali villages, and finally the mystical Mustang plateau
  • Thorong La: is one of the great high-altitude pass crossings in the Himalayas
  • Muktinath Temple: (religious site for both Hindus and Buddhists) is deeply atmospheric
  • The cultural variety is richer than EBC β€” multiple ethnic groups (Gurung, Thakali, Manangi) across the circuit
  • Less crowded than EBC on many sections
  • What to Consider

  • A road has been built along part of the circuit β€” some sections that were walking trails are now roads with jeep traffic
  • The circuit is now often done partially (starting from Chame or Manang, skipping the lower valley sections)
  • Weather on Thorong La can close the pass for days in winter

    Our Pick for Different Travelers

Choose EBC if: You specifically want to stand near the world's highest mountain. The brand recognition matters to you. You have 14–16 days available and are comfortable with high altitude.

Choose Annapurna Circuit if: You value diversity over a single destination, have 18–21 days, and want a more varied cultural and landscape experience. Or if flight disruptions at Lukla concern you (the circuit starts overland).

Short on time? Consider the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek instead β€” 7–10 days, starting from Pokhara, reaching 4,130m. The views of the Annapurna south face are stunning and the circuit is physically accessible to most fit walkers.
