The Most-Travelled Road in Northeast India
The Guwahati to Shillong highway is the busiest inter-city road in Northeast India. Every day, thousands of vehicles travel this 100km stretch connecting Assam's commercial capital to Meghalaya's capital city. It's the primary gateway for travelers flying into Guwahati (Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport) before heading into the hills.
The drive covers roughly 3 to 4 hours in normal traffic, though congestion at the Meghalaya border checkpost (at Jorabat) and on the winding hills section can extend this to 5 hours on busy days.
The Route: NH6
The main highway is National Highway 6 (previously NH40), running from Guwahati through Jorabat, up through the Khasi Hills via Nongpoh and Barapani (Umiam Lake), and into Shillong.
Key Milestones:
The Nongpoh Stop
Nongpoh is the unofficial midpoint and the go-to stop for food. The roadside stalls and small restaurants here sell:
The town is always busy, especially on weekends when Guwahati residents drive up for weekend breaks in Shillong. Allow 20β30 minutes here.
The Barapani Stretch
As you pass Nongpoh and climb into the Khasi Hills, the landscape transforms. The flat Assam plains give way to pine-forested hills, and then suddenly Umiam Lake appears β a vast reservoir glittering in the valley below. This stretch of highway, from around Umsning to Shillong, is genuinely scenic.
A few small roadside viewpoints allow photos of the lake. The dam itself has a small park on the far bank that's worth visiting if you have time.
Common Issues on This Route
Traffic at Jorabat
The border checkpost area at Jorabat regularly backs up, especially on Friday evenings, holiday eves, and Sunday afternoons (return traffic to Guwahati). Allow extra time on these days.
Accidents & Road Quality
NH6 is being expanded to four lanes in several sections. Construction zones create slowdowns and occasional single-lane alternating traffic. The winding sections above Nongpoh also see accidents during monsoon when visibility drops.
Fog in Winter
December and January mornings can bring thick fog on the Khasi Hills section. Drivers should use fog lights and reduce speed significantly.
Alternatives to NH6
Via Mawlai (Old Road)
A slightly different approach into Shillong through the Mawlai suburb avoids some city traffic if you're heading to the north side of Shillong.
Via Nongkynmaw
Some drivers take a longer route via Nongkynmaw to avoid the Jorabat bottleneck, but this adds significant time.
