Markets as a Window into Culture

The best way to understand a place is often through its markets β€” where people buy food, trade gossip, and interact in the rhythms of daily life unsanitized for tourist consumption. Meghalaya's markets are particularly worth visiting because they reflect the matrilineal Khasi society: markets here are predominantly run and managed by women. The thma (market women) are the economic backbone of Khasi commerce.

Iewduh (Bara Bazaar), Shillong

Iewduh β€” meaning "the big market" in Khasi β€” is the largest traditional market in Northeast India. Located in the heart of Shillong, it sprawls across several covered and open sections, operating six days a week (closed Sunday).

What you'll find:

  • Fresh produce section:: Enormous variety of vegetables, many of which you won't recognize β€” local varieties of yam, taro, wild mushrooms, bamboo shoots at various stages of fermentation, local chillies, and exotic forest greens.
  • Meat section:: Khasi smoked pork (a specialty), dried fish (nakham), fresh chicken, beef, and pork cuts.
  • Jadoh vendors:: Women selling ready-made jadoh (rice and pork) from large pots from early morning β€” this is the best jadoh in Shillong, eaten at plastic tables in the middle of the market.
  • Kwai (betel nut) stalls:: Dozens of vendors selling the betel nut, leaf, and lime combinations that are central to Khasi social culture.
  • Household goods, clothing, electronics:: The market expands beyond food into general merchandise.
  • Best time to visit: Early morning (7–9 AM) for the freshest produce and the most atmospheric atmosphere. The jadoh stalls are at their busiest and best between 7 and 10 AM.

Location: Central Shillong, near the main bus stand. Easy to walk to from most hotels in the Police Bazaar area.

    Police Bazaar

Shillong's modern commercial hub β€” a dense concentration of shops, street food vendors, electronics, clothing, and restaurants around the main police bazaar square. More chaotic than Iewduh but excellent for:

  • Local street food:: Pukhlein, boiled eggs, roasted corn, momos (dumplings)
  • Khasi handicrafts and textiles:
  • Music shops: (Shillong's music culture means well-stocked guitar and instrument shops)
  • Pharmacy and essentials:

    Village Haats (Weekly Markets)

In rural Meghalaya, weekly markets (haats) are the commercial heartbeat of villages that are too small for permanent shops. These happen on fixed days of the week in specific villages β€” the whole community descends to buy, sell, and socialise.

    Notable weekly markets:

  • Smit village market: (Khyrim area, near Nongkrem) β€” Friday market
  • Bara Bazaar stalls

    Bara Bazaar stalls

  • Pynursla market: (on the Shillong–Dawki road) β€” weekly
  • Jowai market: (Jaintia Hills) β€” multiple weekly market days
  • At village haats, you'll find: fresh produce from surrounding farms, locally woven textiles, forest products (honey, medicinal plants, wild mushrooms), traditional crafts, and the unmistakable rhythm of rural Meghalayan life.

    Shillong's Craft Market

Near Ward's Lake and Police Bazaar, a small craft market sells Meghalayan handicrafts to tourists β€” bamboo and cane products, traditional weaving, handmade jewellery, and local honey and spices. Less authentic than Iewduh but convenient for souvenir shopping.

    Tips for Market Visiting

  • Bargaining:: Khasi markets have a culture of fixed or near-fixed prices, particularly in Iewduh. Don't haggle aggressively β€” it's considered rude. Gentle negotiation is acceptable for larger purchases.
  • Photography:: Always ask before photographing individual vendors or shoppers. Most people are happy to be photographed if you ask with a smile.
  • Cash only:: Markets are entirely cash-based. Carry small denominations.
  • Early morning:: The first hour after opening is the best β€” freshest produce, most active atmosphere, least crowded.
  • Try the food:: The ready-made food in Iewduh (jadoh, doh-khlieh, pukhlein) is delicious and very inexpensive.
