The mistake almost every Kerala honeymoon makes
Couples arrive with an itinerary that has six places in seven days. Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey, Kovalam, Kanyakumari. It looks generous on paper. In practice you spend your honeymoon packing a suitcase every morning and arriving somewhere new at dusk, too tired to do anything but eat and sleep.
A honeymoon needs the opposite of a sightseeing trip. Fewer bases. Longer stays. At least one day where nothing is planned at all.
Here is the route we actually build for couples.
The shape: three bases in seven days
Munnar, two nights. Thekkady, one. Alleppey houseboat, one. Varkala, two.
That is four stops across seven days, and only one of them is a single night. You unpack properly twice. The drives between them are three to four hours, not seven.
We fly you into Kochi and out of Trivandrum, which sounds fussy but saves an entire day of backtracking down the same road you came up.
Day 1 and 2 — Munnar, and why two nights
Kochi to Munnar is about 130 km and four hours, climbing out of the heat through cardamom and rubber. Most itineraries give Munnar one night, which means you arrive at five, sleep, and leave at nine.
Two nights buys you a full day in the tea. Eravikulam National Park in the morning, where the Nilgiri tahr walks up to the path. Mattupetty and Kundala. Top Station in the late afternoon, looking down into Tamil Nadu with the cloud coming up the valley at you.
The other thing two nights buys is a morning with no alarm.
Day 3 — Thekkady
Three to four hours across to Periyar. The lake cruise in the late afternoon is when the elephants and gaur come down to drink. A guided spice plantation walk — cardamom, pepper, nutmeg, vanilla — is one of the few tourist activities in India that is genuinely interesting rather than dutiful.
One night here is right. There is not a second day of things to do.
Day 4 — The houseboat, and why it must be private
This is the day people remember, and it is the day most worth spending money on.
A kettuvallam boards around noon, cruises the Vembanad canals through the afternoon, and moors before dark — night movement on the canals is not permitted. You are tied up by six with a cook aboard and nothing to do.
Book a private one-bedroom boat, not a shared one. On a shared boat you have a cabin and share the deck with strangers. On a private boat the deck is yours, and the deck is the entire point. The difference in price is real and it is the best money you will spend on the trip.

Day 5 and 6 — Varkala, and the empty day
Three and a half hours south to a red cliff above the Arabian Sea. Varkala is not Kovalam — it is quieter, and it has the better sunset by some distance.
Day 6 has nothing on it. No sights, no driving, no pickup time. Swim at Papanasam Beach, take an Ayurvedic massage in the afternoon, walk the cliff path in the evening.
Couples sometimes ask us to fill it. We push back, gently. In eight years of doing this, nobody has told us afterwards that the empty day was a mistake.
Day 7 — Out from Trivandrum
An hour to the airport.
What this costs, honestly
Kerala tourist cabs are priced on a daily kilometre allowance with extra running charged per kilometre, plus a driver night-halt allowance. Toll and parking are at actuals. That is standard across the state and not something any operator can avoid — but we can fold an estimate into one figure if you would rather not think about it. Just ask when you book.
The houseboat and the hotels are the variables. A private boat and a good Munnar room are where a Kerala honeymoon budget should go.
When to come
September to March is the settled window. December and January are the busiest and the priciest.
June to September is the monsoon. It is green, cheap, and the traditional Ayurveda season — but Munnar can sit inside a cloud for three days and you will not see the tea. Some couples love it. Know which you are booking.
One last thing
Alcohol is restricted in Kerala. Many hotels do not serve it and houseboats do not stock it. If you want a bottle on the deck for your first night, bring it with you.
