Meghalaya in 3 Days β€” The Classic Circuit

Three days is the sweet spot for first-time visitors. You'll cover the highlights: Shillong's city sights, Cherrapunji's waterfalls and caves, and the legendary Dawki river. All by private cab β€” no bus connections, no waiting.

This itinerary assumes you arrive in Guwahati (by flight or train) and depart from Guwahati. Your driver picks you up from Guwahati airport or city.

---

Day 1 β€” Guwahati to Shillong (with Umiam Lake stop)

Drive: ~3 hours from Guwahati city / ~2 hours from Guwahati airport

Morning:

  • Umiam Lake (Barapani): β€” Your first proper Meghalaya sight. Stop for 30–45 minutes to soak in the view of this massive reservoir ringed by pine hills. Boating is available if you have time.
  • Afternoon β€” Shillong city sights:

  • Elephant Falls: β€” A beautiful three-tiered waterfall inside town. 30-min visit.
  • Don Bosco Museum: β€” 7-story museum on Northeast India's tribes and cultures. Allow 1.5–2 hours. One of the best museums in the entire country.
  • Police Bazaar: β€” Evening street food and shopping. Try momos, Jadoh (rice + pork), or pukhlein (fried rice cakes).
  • Stay: Shillong city β€” many good mid-range hotels near Police Bazaar.

Tip: Ask your driver to time Elephant Falls for the late afternoon when light is best.

    ---

Day 2 β€” Shillong to Cherrapunji and back

Drive: ~54 km one way (~1.5 hours)

This is your waterfall day. Leave by 8:00 AM to avoid coach tour buses.

    Morning:

  • Nohkalikai Falls: β€” India's tallest plunge waterfall (340m). Best visited in the morning before mist builds up. 30 minutes here.
  • Eco Park: β€” Walk to the viewpoint. On a clear day, you can see Bangladesh plains below. Also has a view of Seven Sisters Falls.
  • Seven Sisters Falls: β€” Visible from the road. Best from October to January.
  • Afternoon:

  • Mawsmai Cave: β€” A 150-metre walk-through limestone cave. Low, narrow, atmospheric. 30 minutes.
  • Arwah Cave: β€” Less touristy, takes about 1 hour. Good if you love caves.
  • Local lunch: β€” Stop at a dhaba near Sohra (Cherrapunji town) for Khasi food.
  • Return to Shillong by evening.

Optional: If you want to trek to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge at Nongriat β€” you'll need 6–7 hours for the trek alone. Consider swapping this into Day 2 and moving Dawki to a different day, or join a dedicated trek day as an extension.

    ---

Day 3 β€” Dawki and Mawlynnong, then Guwahati

Early start β€” leave Shillong by 7:00 AM

    Morning:

  • Dawki / Umngot River: β€” The famous glass-clear river where boats appear to float on air. Arrive early (by 9–9:30 AM) before tour buses fill the ghats. Take a boat ride (~β‚Ή100 per person, 20 minutes). Don't miss the Bangladesh border view.
  • Shnongpdeng: β€” Just 2 km before Dawki, this riverside camp spot is quieter and prettier in some ways.
  • Midday:

  • Mawlynnong: β€” Asia's Cleanest Village, ~19 km from Dawki. Immaculate lanes with bamboo dustbins. Visit the Sky Walk (bamboo tree house). Stay for lunch at a village home kitchen.
  • Afternoon:

  • Drive back towards Guwahati via Shillong. Total drive ~4–4.5 hours.
  • Stop at Umiam Lake again for sunset photos if time permits.

  • SUV/Innova:: Better for 6–7 people or anyone wanting more comfort on the mountain roads
  • All our drivers know these routes well β€” most have done them hundreds of times
  • Your driver handles all navigation and knows when to reach each spot early.
