The Caving Capital of South Asia
Meghalaya sits atop a vast belt of limestone β and limestone means caves. The state is home to over 1,700 documented caves, including the longest, deepest, and most complex cave systems in South Asia. The Meghalaya Adventure Association (MAA) has been exploring and mapping these systems since the 1990s, and new passages are still being discovered every year.
For travelers, Meghalaya's caves range from easy walk-through tourist caves to multi-day expeditions requiring ropes, wetsuits, and technical training.
The Major Cave Systems
Krem Liat Prah β South Asia's Longest Cave
At over 31 kilometres of surveyed passage, Krem Liat Prah in the Jaintia Hills is the longest cave in South Asia. It connects with nearby Krem Um Im-Labit to form a system exceeding 35km. Exploration is ongoing β each expedition adds more metres to the map.
This is an expert-only cave. You will need to arrange an expedition through the Meghalaya Adventure Association with experienced cavers. Not suitable for casual visitors.
Krem Mawmluh β The Tourist Cave
Located near Cherrapunji, Krem Mawmluh is 7.1km long β the fourth longest in South Asia β but its first section (about 1km) has been made accessible for guided tourist visits. Inside you'll find:
Entry is via the Meghalaya Adventure Association office in Cherrapunji. Guides are mandatory and helmets/torches are provided. Expect to get wet β wear clothes you don't mind muddying.
Mawsmai Cave β The Easiest Option
The most visited cave in Meghalaya, Mawsmai is fully illuminated and requires no special equipment. The 150-metre walkthrough trail takes about 20 minutes. Impressive formations and narrow squeezes make it memorable even for non-cavers. Located 1km from Cherrapunji town.
Siju Cave β The Bat Cave
In the Garo Hills, Siju Cave runs along the Simsang River. Famous for its enormous bat population (hundreds of thousands of wrinkled-lipped bats) and spectacular stalactite chambers. The cave has been explored to nearly 5km. Access is from Baghmara, about 4 hours from Shillong.
Krem Phyllut
Near Mawsynram, Krem Phyllut features some of the most spectacular stalactite formations in Meghalaya. Less visited than Mawsmai, giving it a more adventurous feel.
