Meghalaya's Winter Season

While Meghalaya is beautiful year-round, the December to February window is often called its "golden season" — not because of any single event, but because everything simply works better in winter. The rains have ended, the air is clear, the roads are dry, and the views extend for dozens of kilometres on good days.

This is when Meghalaya's landscapes look most like the postcards: the crystal-clear Umngot River at Dawki, the sharp outline of every waterfall against blue sky, the pine forests turning golden in the low winter sun.

Temperature & Weather

Meghalaya's winter is cool but not extreme for most visitors. Understanding what to expect by location:

Shillong (1,496m):

  • December: 8–18°C (nights cool, days pleasant)
  • January: 5–15°C (coldest month — can drop to 3–4°C on cold nights)
  • February: 8–19°C (beginning to warm, still comfortable)
  • Cherrapunji (1,430m):

  • Similar to Shillong, slightly cooler due to wind exposure on the plateau edge
  • Dawki (low altitude, ~200m):

  • Warmer year-round — 15–25°C in winter. Much more comfortable than the hills.
  • Garo Hills (Tura, ~400m):

  • Mild winter — 15–28°C. Barely feels like winter at all.
  • What's Open & Available

All major attractions in Meghalaya are fully operational in winter:

  • Boat rides at Dawki — at their best (clearest water)
  • Meghalaya winter mist

  • All trekking routes — dry and comfortable
  • Living Root Bridge trek — manageable without monsoon mud
  • All caves — accessible
  • All roads — best conditions of the year
  • Fog: The One Caveat

January mornings in Shillong and the Khasi Hills can bring thick fog, sometimes reducing visibility to near zero. This usually burns off by 10–11 AM, but it affects:

  • Early morning photography (though the fog itself can be beautiful)
  • Driving speed on mountain roads
  • Views from exposed plateau viewpoints
  • Tip: Start drives at 9–10 AM in January rather than 7 AM, letting the fog clear first.

    Top Winter Activities

    Dawki & Umngot River

The peak season for Dawki's famous crystal-clear river is November to March. December and January see the least rainfall and clearest water. This is when the boat-appears-to-float photos are most realistic.

    Living Root Bridge Trek

The 3km trek down to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge near Cherrapunji is at its most comfortable in winter. The trail is dry, the steps (all 3,491 of them) are not slippery, and the forest is cool and pleasant.

    David Scott Trail

The 16km heritage trek between Mawphlang and Ladmawphlang is best done in winter when the grass is dry and the views from open hillsides are sharpest.

    Kaziranga National Park (Assam)

If you're combining Meghalaya with Assam, December–March is prime wildlife season in Kaziranga. The park is open (October to April) and animal sightings are excellent.

    Shillong Music & Food Scene

Winter brings a festive atmosphere to Shillong's cafes and music venues. The Christmas and New Year period is particularly lively, with events, concerts, and decorated markets throughout December.

    Packing for Meghalaya Winter

    Essential:

  • A warm jacket or fleece (particularly for Shillong evenings and Cherrapunji wind)
  • Layers — the temperature swings significantly between 9 AM and 9 PM
  • Comfortable walking shoes (waterproof is still a good idea)
  • Sunscreen — winter sun at altitude is deceptively strong
  • Nice to have:

  • Thermal underlayer for January nights in Shillong
  • Light rain jacket (showers are rare but possible)
  • Scarf and gloves for December–January evenings
  • Places Not to Miss in Winter

  • **Dawki** (Umngot River at peak clarity)
  • **Laitlum Canyons** (clearest winter views)
  • **Cherrapunji** (all waterfalls still flowing from late monsoon reserves, plus caves)
  • **Shillong city** (cafes, music, Christmas atmosphere in December)
  • **Mawphlang Sacred Grove** (atmospheric in cool winter mist)
  • 6. Nongkhnum Island (riverbank beaches at their most accessible)

    Crowd Levels

Winter is peak tourist season in Meghalaya, particularly around Christmas and New Year (Dec 24 – Jan 2). Expect:

  • Higher hotel rates and less availability in Shillong during this window
  • More crowded viewpoints at Dawki and Mawlynnong
  • Heavier traffic on the Shillong–Cherrapunji highway on weekends
  • Book accommodation well in advance for the Christmas–New Year window.
