Don't Expect Urban Coverage in the Hills
One of the first things travelers discover in Meghalaya is that mobile network coverage disappears fast once you leave the main towns. The state's rugged terrain β deep gorges, dense forest, remote plateaus β is the enemy of cellular signals. Planning your trip with realistic expectations about connectivity will save you frustration.
Here is what you actually need to know about mobile networks in Meghalaya.

Which SIM Card Works Best in Meghalaya?
BSNL: The Rural Champion
BSNL (the government telecom provider) has the widest coverage in Meghalaya's rural and remote areas. In places where Jio and Airtel show no bars, BSNL often has 2G or even 3G signal. If you're heading to places like Nongkhnum Island, remote Jaintia Hills roads, or the Garo Hills interior, a BSNL SIM is your best backup.
Downsides: BSNL data speeds are slow (often 2G/EDGE in rural areas), and the BSNL app/online recharge system is less smooth than private operators.
Jio: Best in Meghalaya's Towns
Jio has excellent coverage in Shillong, Cherrapunji (town area), Jowai, and Tura. It often has 4G where Airtel and Vi have only 3G. However, Jio coverage drops off sharply on rural roads and in valleys.
Best for: Travelers staying mainly in Shillong and tourist hotspots.
Airtel: Reliable in Most Tourist Spots
Airtel covers Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki, and Mawlynnong well. Signal quality is generally good where it exists. Coverage in the Jaintia Hills and Garo Hills is patchier.
Best for: Travelers on a standard Meghalaya tourist circuit.
Vi (Vodafone-Idea): Not Recommended
Vi's infrastructure in Northeast India is limited. Coverage in Meghalaya is significantly weaker than Jio, Airtel, or BSNL. Not recommended as a primary SIM.

Roaming in Northeast India (For Tourists from Other States)
If you're visiting with a SIM from another state, check that your plan includes roaming in Northeast India. Meghalaya, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh are in the North East telecom circle, which some base plans treat as roaming.
