The Monsoon Road Trip: Guwahati to Shillong to Sohra When the Hills Turn Green

The Drive Is the Destination

Between June and September, the 150-kilometre run from Guwahati up to Shillong and on to Sohra becomes one of the great monsoon drives of India. The Western Ghats get the press; the Khasi Hills deliver more waterfalls per kilometre, fewer crowds, and better roads than almost any hill route in the country.

Here's the drive, stage by stage, as it plays in full monsoon.

Stage 1: Guwahati โ†’ Umiam Lake (80 km, ~2 hrs)

You leave the Brahmaputra plains โ€” hot, green, paddy flooded silver โ€” and NH6 starts climbing almost immediately. The temperature drops a degree every few minutes. Somewhere around Nongpoh, the vegetation flips from plains tropical to hill forest and the first roadside waterfalls appear.

Then the classic reveal: Umiam Lake, monsoon-full, spread below the highway with cloud sitting right on the water. Every vehicle stops here. Budget twenty minutes and a chai at the viewpoint.

Stage 2: Umiam โ†’ Shillong (15 km, ~40 min with traffic)

Short, urban, worth it for the arrival โ€” Shillong materialises out of the mist, tin roofs and pine ridges stacked up the hillsides. Overnight here (see our Shillong-in-the-rain guide for the cafรฉ-and-music evening).

Stage 3: Shillong โ†’ Sohra (54 km, ~1.5 hrs) โ€” The Main Event

This is the stretch people fly across the country for. The road rides the top of the plateau through open grassland that in monsoon glows an almost artificial green. Then the land starts dropping away on both sides into cloud-filled gorges.

  • Duwan Sing Syiem bridge viewpoint: โ€” gorges on both sides pouring with anonymous cascades
  • Mawkdok Dympep Valley: โ€” the famous V-shaped gorge, at its best when cloud pours *through* the V like slow-motion water
  • The Guwahati to Shillong highway climbing into the clouds

  • The last 20 minutes into Sohra, where on a wet week you'll count **a dozen unnamed waterfalls** streaming down the cliffs beside the car
  • Rule for this stage: it takes 90 minutes on paper, so schedule three hours. Every bend earns a stop.

    Stage 4: The Sohra Circuit

From your Sohra base: the falls (Nohkalikai, Seven Sisters, Dainthlen, Wei Sawdong, Kynrem), the caves (Mawsmai, Arwah โ€” perfect rain shelters), and the plunge down toward Mawlynnong if the weather opens. Each is covered in its own guide on this blog.

    Monsoon Driving Reality Check

The roads are good โ€” genuinely good, among the best hill roads in India. The variables are mist (visibility can drop to metres in seconds), occasional small landslides (usually cleared within hours), and waterfalls that run *across* the road in spots. None of it is a problem with a local driver who reads these hills daily; all of it is stressful in a self-driven rental with a map app and hope.

We've been running this route through every monsoon since we started. WhatsApp +91 8855853857 โ€” tell us your dates and we'll plan the drive with the right stops, the right pacing, and a driver who knows exactly which bend hides the next waterfall.
