An Island in the Khasi Hills
Most people don't associate Meghalaya with river islands. But in the West Khasi Hills, a branch of the Kynshi River (also called the Jadukata River) wraps around a large landmass to create Nongkhnum β a flat, fertile island roughly 18km long and 8km wide. It is among the largest river islands in Asia and is almost entirely unknown outside Northeast India.
The island is inhabited by several Khasi villages and is primarily agricultural β paddy fields, betel gardens, and small farms cover most of its interior. But its real appeal for visitors lies in the riverside beaches and clear streams along its edges: sandy banks, shallow crystal-clear water, and absolute quiet.
How to Get There
Nongkhnum is located near Nongstoin, the headquarters of West Khasi Hills district, about 100km west of Shillong (approximately 3 hours by road on NH106).
To reach the island, you cross the Kynshi River on a small ferry from the village of Priang (or, in dry season, you may be able to wade across at shallow points). The ferry ride takes just a few minutes.
A permit is required for entry β available at the District Tourism Office in Nongstoin or sometimes from officials at the ferry point. Indians generally pay a nominal fee.
What to Do on the Island
Sandy Riverside Beaches
The main draw is the series of clean, sandy beaches along the inner channel of the Kynshi River. The water is clear and shallow β ideal for wading, swimming, and picnicking. The setting is peaceful and the beaches rarely crowded even on weekends.
Village Walks
The interior of the island has several Khasi villages connected by paths. Walking between them gives you a glimpse of traditional rural Khasi life: bamboo houses, small temples, betel nut gardens, and women weaving on looms outside their homes.
Fishing
The rivers around the island are rich in freshwater fish. Locals fish using traditional traps and nets, and it's possible to arrange a fishing outing through village homestays.
Photography
The contrast of the sandy banks, green fields, and forested hills beyond the river makes for excellent landscape photography β particularly in the golden hour before sunset.
Where to Stay
Nongkhnum has basic homestays in the villages β simple, clean, and hospitable. Most visitors come on a day trip, but an overnight stay transforms the experience. There are also better-equipped guesthouses in Nongstoin town for those who prefer more facilities.
