Pokhara vs Kathmandu: Which Nepal City Should You Visit First?

Two Cities, Two Completely Different Experiences

Kathmandu and Pokhara are Nepal's two main tourist destinations, and they could hardly be more different. Kathmandu is a dense, chaotic, culturally overwhelming medieval city of temples, markets, and ancient squares. Pokhara is a lakeside resort town β€” relaxed, clean, and oriented toward the Annapurna mountains.

Most visitors to Nepal see both. But if you only have time for one, or if you're trying to decide where to start, this comparison will help.

Kathmandu: The Cultural Capital

What Kathmandu Is

Nepal's capital is a city of 1.5 million people, ancient temple squares, and a UNESCO heritage zone that predates most European capitals. It is noisy, polluted, and endlessly fascinating.

Why You Should Go

  • Pashupatinath Temple: β€” one of Hinduism's holiest sites, with cremation ghats on the Bagmati River that offer a profound and moving window into Hinduism's relationship with death
  • Boudhanath Stupa: β€” the world's largest stupa, a center of Tibetan Buddhism in exile
  • Swayambhunath: β€” the famous "Monkey Temple" on a hill above the city
  • Bhaktapur & Patan: β€” medieval Newari cities in the Kathmandu Valley, better preserved than Kathmandu itself
  • Shopping: β€” thangka paintings, Tibetan carpets, Buddhist artifacts, pashmina, and trekking gear
  • What Kathmandu Is Challenging

  • Air pollution (worse November–February)
  • Traffic and road congestion
  • Dust and crowding in the old city
  • Pokhara lake and mountains

  • Aggressive touts near major tourist sites
  • Best For

History, culture, ancient temples, shopping, city exploration, and travelers who want to understand Nepal's religious and cultural complexity.

    Pokhara: The Mountain Gateway

    What Pokhara Is

A lakeside town at the edge of the Annapurna Himalayan range β€” Nepal's most popular trekking base and the most relaxed major city in the country.

    Why You Should Go

  • Phewa Lake: β€” boating on the lake with the Annapurna range reflected in the water is one of Nepal's iconic images
  • Sarangkot Sunrise: β€” the dawn view over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges from this hilltop (40 minutes above town) is among the best mountain views in the Himalayas
  • Trekking: β€” Pokhara is the starting point for the Annapurna Circuit, Annapurna Base Camp, and Poon Hill treks
  • Adventure sports: β€” paragliding (one of the world's best paragliding spots), white-water rafting, bungee jumping
  • Atmosphere: β€” the lakeside has excellent restaurants, cafes, and a genuinely chilled-out backpacker vibe
  • What Pokhara Is Challenging

  • Less cultural depth than Kathmandu
  • Tourist infrastructure can feel generic (many restaurants serve the same international menu)
  • Mountain views are weather-dependent β€” clouds can obscure the Annapurna range for days at a time
  • Best For

Trekkers, adventure sports enthusiasts, mountain view seekers, and travelers who want to relax and enjoy natural scenery.

    Our Recommendation

Start in Kathmandu. Fly in, spend 2–3 days absorbing the temples, Durbar Squares, and the Boudhanath/Pashupatinath experience. Then take the tourist bus or a 25-minute domestic flight to Pokhara for 3–4 days of mountain views, lakeside relaxation, and trekking (even a short day hike to Sarangkot transforms the experience).

If you only have 4 days total: Kathmandu for 1.5 days, Pokhara for 2.5 days.

If you're primarily a trekker: Kathmandu for 1 day (Boudhanath + Thamel shopping for gear), then directly to Pokhara as your trek base.

If you're culturally focused and not interested in trekking: More time in Kathmandu and the Kathmandu Valley (Bhaktapur, Patan) is more rewarding.
