The City That Runs on Music
Ask any musician in India about Shillong and watch their face light up. This Meghalayan hill town β population just 350,000 β has produced an extraordinary density of bands, soloists, and musical genres that is completely disproportionate to its size. It is home to India's most celebrated rock bands, a world-famous choral group, and a guitar culture so deeply rooted that visitors often stumble into live music without even trying.
Why Shillong Became India's Rock Capital
The roots go back to the 1960s and 70s. Shillong's large Christian population (over 80% of Meghalaya is Christian) meant exposure to Western music through church choirs and missionary schools. British colonial influence had already established a culture of Western instruments and orchestral music. When rock and roll arrived via shortwave radio and smuggled vinyl, it found fertile ground.
The Khasi people's oral musical tradition β strong rhythms, call-and-response patterns, group harmonisation β translated remarkably well to rock and blues structures. And the isolation of the hills created a scene that incubated its own sound rather than simply copying Delhi or Mumbai.
Shillong's Most Famous Musicians
Lou Majaw
The "Bob Dylan of the Northeast" β Lou Majaw has been performing for over 50 years and is something close to a living legend. His annual concert on Bob Dylan's birthday (May 24) draws fans from across India. He performs regularly at venues around Shillong and is often seen at local cafΓ©s.
Soulmate
The blues duo of Rudy Wallang and Tipriti Kharbangar is the most internationally recognised act from Shillong. They've performed at jazz and blues festivals across Asia and are considered among India's finest blues musicians.
Shillong Chamber Choir
A classical choral ensemble that has won international competitions including the prestigious World Choir Games. They've performed at Carnegie Hall and regularly collaborate with international orchestras. Widely considered the best choir in Asia.
Where to Hear Live Music
Cloud 9
The most consistent live music venue in Shillong. House bands perform nightly, and touring acts from across India stop here regularly. Expect rock, blues, and occasional jazz.
Vintage Bar
A pub atmosphere with live music on Friday and Saturday nights. Gets lively after 8 PM.
Dylan's CafΓ©
Named after Bob Dylan, with photographs and album covers covering the walls. Acoustic sessions, open-mic nights, and the occasional more intimate performance.
Hotel Shillong
The bar at Hotel Shillong has hosted legendary performances β including Lou Majaw himself on occasion.
Local Churches
For a completely different musical experience, attend a Sunday morning service at one of Shillong's larger churches. The choral singing β four-part harmonies, full congregations β is extraordinary.
The Guitar Culture
Police Bazaar has more guitar shops per block than most Indian cities have per district. Walking in is like entering a parallel universe β Stratocasters and Les Pauls share space with local-brand electrics, ukuleles, and mandolins. Music stores also double as community gathering spots, where local musicians hang out, jam informally, and gossip about the scene.
Shillong Music Festival
Held annually (usually in October), the Shillong Music Festival brings international and national artists to the city for a week of concerts. Previous editions have featured jazz legends, rock giants, and Bollywood stars performing against the backdrop of the Khasi Hills.
