54 Kilometres of Extraordinary Scenery

The drive from Shillong to Cherrapunji covers just 54km but takes you through some of the most dramatic landscapes in India. You'll descend from the Shillong plateau, traverse a narrow ridge road above a deep gorge, pass living root bridges in the valleys below, and arrive at the edge of the world — a plateau escarpment where the land drops thousands of metres to the Bangladesh plains and where some of the most powerful waterfalls on earth pour over the edge.

Even experienced Northeast India travelers consistently call this one of the country's best drives.

The Route: NH206 (Old Shillong–Cherrapunji Road)

There are two roads between Shillong and Cherrapunji:

  • **NH206 (via Mawkdok)** — the main highway, faster, more developed
  • **Old Cherrapunji Road (via Mawshbuit/Sohra Road)** — narrower, more scenic, less traffic
  • Most visitors take NH206 on the way there and return via a slightly different route, or simply stay on NH206 both ways. The highway is well-maintained and most sections are wide enough for two vehicles.

    Key Stops Along the Way

Mawkdok Dympep Valley View (25km from Shillong)

The first major stop is the Mawkdok viewpoint, where a pullout on the right side of the highway overlooks a deep, forested gorge. On clear days the view extends for dozens of kilometres into the hills. A zip-line crosses the gorge here (operated by a local adventure company) — one of the most scenic zip-lines in India.

Mawphlang Sacred Grove (25km from Shillong, slight detour)

A short detour off the highway leads to the Mawphlang Sacred Forest — 75 hectares of ancient protected grove maintained by the local Khasi community for 500+ years. Guided walks take 1.5–2 hours.

Nohkalikai Falls Viewpoint (50km from Shillong, near Cherrapunji)

Just before reaching Cherrapunji town, a short detour leads to the Nohkalikai viewpoint — India's tallest plunge waterfall at 340 metres.

    Cherrapunji (Sohra) Town

The town itself has several good restaurants serving Khasi thali and the Meghalaya Tourism bungalow is a useful base. The main market has shops selling local honey (Cherrapunji honey is famous), spices, and traditional crafts.

    Attractions at Cherrapunji

Once you arrive, a full day can easily be filled:

  • Mawsmai Cave: — illuminated limestone cave, 20-minute walkthrough
  • Seven Sisters Falls (Nohsngithiang): — best seen October to January
  • Eco Park: — panoramic views; on clear days Bangladesh is visible
  • Ramakrishna Mission: — a peaceful heritage building with views
  • Kynrem Falls: — a three-tiered waterfall 7km from Sohra
  • Double Decker Living Root Bridge: — requires a 3–4 hour trek from Tyrna (30km away)
  • Best Time to Make This Drive

  • October to November:: Post-monsoon. Waterfalls are at peak volume. The entire plateau edge is thundering with water. The most spectacular time.
  • December to February:: Clear skies, cooler temperatures (8–15°C). Less mist, so views are sharper. The drive is most enjoyable.
  • March to May:: Warming up but still comfortable. Good road conditions.
  • June to September:: Monsoon. The drive itself is extraordinary — thick mist, running waterfalls on the cliff faces, dramatic atmosphere. But low visibility means stopping at viewpoints may be frustrating. Cherrapunji receives intense rain; the falls are powerful but often hidden by cloud.

    Driving Tips

  • Start early — by 7–8 AM from Shillong. Viewpoints get crowded with tour groups by 10–11 AM.
  • Avoid this drive on **foggy winter mornings** until the fog clears (usually by 9–10 AM).
  • The road narrows in places — large buses need extra space when passing.
  • Fill fuel in Shillong; petrol stations in Cherrapunji town are limited.
  • The drive back is equally scenic but traffic can be heavy on weekend evenings.
