Dawki: Where the River Looks Like Glass
Of all the extraordinary sights in Meghalaya, the Umngot River at Dawki may be the most photographed. The river forms the border between India and Bangladesh here, and its water is so transparent that boats appear to hover in mid-air — you can see the riverbed clearly even in 2–3 metres of depth. The boats casting shadows on the bottom make for images so surreal they routinely go viral on social media.
The drive from Shillong to Dawki covers 83km (approximately 2.5–3 hours) and passes through some of the most scenic country in Meghalaya, including the spectacular canyon road above Pynursla.
The Route
Shillong → Pynursla → Dawki
The road descends from the Shillong plateau, winds through the Khasi Hills, and then drops dramatically in a series of switchbacks into the Dawki valley near the Bangladesh border. The last 20km involves steep hairpin bends with dramatic valley views.
Key Stops En Route
Pynursla town (60km from Shillong): A small town on the plateau edge with a few restaurants. Good place for a chai stop. The views of the hills from here begin to open up.
Lyngkyrdem/Borsora Viewpoint: On the descent toward Dawki, several informal viewpoints offer dramatic views of the Dawki Valley below. The river glints far below; Bangladesh's flat plains stretch to the horizon.
Mawlynnong Village (14km from Dawki): One of Asia's cleanest villages, with immaculate gardens, bamboo dustbins, and a community commitment to cleanliness that has become a model for rural sanitation. There's also a single-decker living root bridge nearby and a sky walk (bamboo platform) offering views across the plains into Bangladesh.
At Dawki
The Umngot River Boat Ride
The main activity at Dawki is a boat ride on the Umngot River. Flat-bottomed wooden boats are available for hire at the riverside — prices are fixed (around ₹500–800 per boat for 30–45 minutes). Early morning light is the best for photography. By midday, the light is harsh and the river can get busy.
The Bangladesh Border Area
The actual India-Bangladesh border is midstream in the Umngot River. The border is marked with flags on both banks. The Dawki Land Border crossing (for those with appropriate permits and visas) is one of the few land ports between India and Bangladesh — freight trucks cross here regularly.
Fishing
The Umngot is famous for its mahseer fish, and local fishermen using traditional coracle-style boats are a common sight. Fishing permits can be arranged through local operators.
