Varkala or Kovalam? Choosing Kerala's Beach Town

The short version

Varkala if you want a cliff, a view, sunsets and a younger, quieter, slightly scruffier scene.

Kovalam if you want an easy beach, more hotels at more price points, and a shorter transfer from Trivandrum airport.

They are about 50 km apart and could not feel less alike.

Varkala

The distinguishing feature is the cliff. A red laterite headland runs along the coast with a paved path on top, cafés and shops along it, and the beach below reached by steps.

That geography does two things. It gives you a view over the Arabian Sea from every table, and it means getting to the sand involves stairs — which matters if anyone in your party has knee trouble.

Papanasam Beach below the cliff is also a place of pilgrimage; the name means "washing away of sins" and families come to perform rites for the dead. You are sharing the beach with something meaningful, which is worth knowing before you spread a towel.

Sunset from the north cliff is the best on this coast.

The scene skews younger and more backpacker, with yoga, Ayurveda and long-stay visitors. Food along the cliff is varied and mostly aimed at foreigners.

Kovalam

Three crescent beaches — Lighthouse, Hawa and Samudra — separated by rocky headlands, with the red-and-white lighthouse at the south end that you can climb.

It is flatter and far easier to get to the water. More hotels, more range, and a longer-established resort industry. It is also more built up and in season the Lighthouse stretch is busy.

Twenty minutes from Trivandrum airport, which makes it the sensible choice for a short stay or a first and last night.

Swimming, honestly

Both have a real undertow. This is not a soft-sand paddling coast.

Kovalam has lifeguards on the main beaches in season and flagged swimming areas, and they should be obeyed. Varkala's beach is less supervised and the rip at the north end catches people every year.

Swim where local people are swimming, between flags where there are flags, and not at all in or just after the monsoon.

Which for whom

Honeymoon: Varkala. The cliff-top sunset and the quieter evenings do more for two people than a busier beach does.

Families with small children: Kovalam. Flat access, lifeguards, more choice of food, and shallow water at Hawa Beach.

Anyone with mobility difficulty: Kovalam, clearly. Varkala is stairs.

Ayurveda: both, but Kovalam has more of the established, classified centres.

A short trip: Kovalam, for the twenty-minute transfer.

A long stay: Varkala, which is set up for it.

When to go

November to February is the season on this coast — dry, warm, calm sea.

March to May is hot and humid. The sea is still swimmable early in the day.

June to September is the monsoon. Do not plan a beach holiday then. It is, however, the best Ayurveda window, and both towns are cheap and atmospheric in the rain if that is what you came for.

Fitting them into a Kerala trip

Both work as the last stop, after the hills and the backwaters — you finish with two flat days by the sea and fly out of Trivandrum rather than driving back to Kochi.

That one-way shape saves a full day of backtracking. It only needs your flights to match: in at Kochi, out at Trivandrum.
