Wayanad Travel Guide: Caves, Waterfalls and the Heart-Shaped Lake

Where Wayanad is, and the drive question

Wayanad is Kerala's northern hill district, up against the Karnataka border. From Kochi it is about 250 km and five to six hours, climbing the Thamarassery ghat with its nine hairpin bends.

That drive is the first thing to be honest about. Wayanad is not an add-on to a six-day Kerala trip. It costs you a day getting there and a day coming back. It earns its place on an eight-day itinerary and not on a shorter one.

If you are coming from Bengaluru or Mysuru it is much closer — about six hours from Bengaluru, four from Mysuru — and from that direction it makes far more sense.

Edakkal Caves

Not really caves. A cleft formed where a boulder fell across a fissure, high on Ambukuthi hill.

What makes it extraordinary is inside: petroglyphs cut into the rock, some dated to the Neolithic, possibly 6,000 years old and older. Human figures, animals, wheels, symbols nobody has satisfactorily explained. There is later Brahmi and Tamil script alongside them.

Getting there is a proper climb — a steep path and then metal steps. Allow an hour up and back, more if you stop. Not suitable for anyone with knee trouble, and genuinely hard work in the heat.

Closed Mondays. Go early.

Chembra Peak and the heart-shaped lake

The photograph everyone has seen: a small lake near the summit that is, from the right angle, almost perfectly heart-shaped.

The trek is about two to three hours up. It is not technical but it is steep and exposed, and the last section is hard going.

Read this before you plan around it: Chembra requires a forest permit, the daily numbers are capped, and the peak closes — for fire risk in the dry months, for weather in heavy monsoon, and sometimes for reasons announced that morning. Trips built around Chembra get disappointed regularly. Treat it as a bonus, not a fixture, and ask us to check your dates.

Banasura Sagar

The largest earth dam in India, and the second largest in Asia.

What you come for is the reservoir behind it: islands formed when the valley flooded, tree tops still standing out of the water. Speedboats and pedal boats run from the shore.

Easy access, no walking to speak of. Good for a group with mixed mobility.

Soochipara and Meenmutty

Soochipara (Sentinel Rock) Falls is a three-tier drop with a pool you can swim in at the base. About twenty minutes' walk down, and the walk back up is the price.

Meenmutty is bigger, harder to reach and less visited — a proper forest walk to get there.

Both are at their best from August to December. In March and April they are modest.

Wildlife

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary connects to Bandipur and Nagarhole across the Karnataka border, forming one of the largest contiguous protected areas in South India. Elephants are common. Tigers exist and are rarely seen.

Jeep safaris run in the morning and afternoon in fixed slots. The Tholpetty and Muthanga ranges are the two entry points.

How long you need

Two nights minimum. One night means you have driven six hours to see one thing.

Three nights if you want the Chembra trek and a safari and time in the estates.

When to go

October to May is the settled window, with October to December best for the waterfalls.

The monsoon is heavy and the ghat road gets landslides. The estates are beautiful and the leeches are real.

Wayanad is coffee, pepper and tea country, and an estate stay here is cheaper than the equivalent in Munnar for a similar experience.

Is it worth it?

If you have eight days or more, yes — it is the part of Kerala most visitors skip, and it is quieter for exactly that reason.

If you have six days, do the classic route properly instead. We would rather tell you that now than sell you a week of driving.
